2014 Huatung Choir Camp
The sky is the limit…
In collaboration with Hilber Jakob Memorial Choir, The Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) organized its first ever Huatung Choir Camp, from 1-12 July 2014 at Junyi School for Innovative Learning. The camp, led by Howard Chang, Founder of Hilber Jakob Memorial Choir and dedicated volunteer of ACF, involved 24 local university student volunteers, and brought together 51 campers, from seven high schools in the Huatung (Hualien/Taitung) region of Taiwan.
Alongside Howard, Huatung Choir Camp was co-led by five international vocal professionals including Andrew Alvarez, Jeffrey Kim, Ryan Tan, Hsiao-Ling Chao, and Yu-Ling Wang, coaching campers excerpts from The Lion King musical. Campers experienced diverse learning, and explored different limits to their voices from soprano, alto, tenor, to bass. In 12 days, campers not only learned to sing in a foreign language (English), they also discovered the potentials of their voices. In addition to inspiring campers, 12 local choir teachers were invited to join the camp to observe how different cultures teach, interact, and communicate with their students.
To conclude the camp, the 51 campers performed to patients at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital – Taitung Branch; and on the final day, performed to parents and teachers of their high schools. The camp not only aspires to inspire, but also aims to develop confidence, discover personal potentials, and form a community bond by achieving one goal together in 12 days.
“When people come together for one purpose, it’s beautiful.” – Howard Chang
