Nurturing Arts & Culture
Huadong aborigines are gifted with abundant creativity and artistic talent. Upon recommendation by Alliance’s Chairman, Mr. Yen, and through the International Spot Program (commissioned by Taiwan Tourism Bureau and implemented by the Lovely Taiwan Foundation,) an old dormitory of the Taiwan Railways Administration, Tie Hua Village, was renovated to become a performing arts center for aborigine artists. It also serves as a platform for aborigine youth to explore their artistic instincts.
Given that resources are scarce for many aboriginal youth, Alliance hopes to provide them with opportunities to develop their talents. Alliance helped young people from Bixilian Village form the "Pawpaw Drum Group." Mr. Yen heard a group of young tribal children playing with drums made from old plastic-buoy at SanXianTai Bixilian village. Although the rhythm was very simple, Mr. Yen saw their potential to become professionals with the right training. Mr. Yen invited Mr. Ho Hong-Ji, the Assistant Director of famous drummer Zhu Zhong Ching’s Percussion Group, to give the children in Bixilian village lessons regularly and to help the children perform professionally.
Because of the lack of resources in Huadong, Alliance has sponsored many camp programs during summer and winter vacations to provide education and training opportunites. These camps include the "Huadong Youth Art Camp," the "Huadong Youth English Camps," and the "Huadong Youth Practical Design Camp." Esteemed Taiwan artists and internationally renowned masters are invited to meet the campers to share their experiences and to help widen the young people’s horizons.
Mr. Rafael Lee, an international recording star and an expert drummer, recognized the lack of resources for Huadong youth. He held a special concert entitled "A Summer Latin" to help integrate indigenous music with music from other parts of the world and opened a new perspective for aborigine youth.
Taidong hopes to become an important center for music production in Taiwan. Mr. Rafael Lee invited Mr. Li Hong-Song, the CEO of Dunhuang Music Instrument Company, and Wen-Li Stage Sound and Light Company to sponsor professional audio training programs in Taidong. Both Wen-Li and Yamaha Instrument donated to Alliance the professional stage audio equipment necessary for the training sessions. Alliance hopes to increase employment prospects for Huadong youth through professional audio training.
