Planting a Seed for Education
Nurturing children’s innate talents has been the core mission for all of ACF’s activities that promote culture, art, and education.
ACF has created many opportunities for learning through the Huatung Youth Art Camp, the Huatung Youth Design Camp, and the Huatung Youth English Camps. Although these camps were well received by hundreds of students, Mr. Yen recognized that the short term nature of the camps does not permit the children to learn in a meaningful way. He felt unless he is able to bring about structural changes in the traditional education system, he will not be able to change indigenous children’s future.
In 2011, Mr. Yen became the Chairman of the Junyi School for Innovative Learning. His goal is for Junyi to become the first bilingual school in Huatung where students learn through discovery, with an emphasis on character education. Junyi currently serves elementary and middle school students. Mr. Yen hopes to build a high school in the near future so that Huatung youth can be educated from K through 12th grade in an environment where independent thinking is promoted, demonstrating the possibility of an alternative education system from the traditional one based on passive learning.
Alliance also hopes to integrate vocational training in its high school curriculum which will have two main focuses, the environment and the arts. School learning will be supplemented with internship opportunities in the hospitality business or in the experiential tourism sector. The goal is to provide Huatung youth with the necessary skills to work in their home town and participate in Huatung’s economic growth.
Changing the traditional education system to suit the needs of aborigine children and allow them to become productive citizens is a long term project. Alliance hopes you will participate in this “Project for Hope”!
