2012
December 2011, Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Association's, Master Hsing-Yun, entrusted us with Junyi School for Innovative Learning. Through Junyi, we hope to build a new education platform that will break through the traditional system. We aim to educate and nurture innovative talent through discovery and inspiration. Understanding and appreciation of the indigenous culture and natural environment will be the main theme for learning, along with emphasis on a bilingual education in English and Chinese, as well as character education. In 2012, we've accepted 56 seventh graders, all from underprivileged backgrounds, relying on our scholarship porgram. We hope to create a sustainable education development plan for children living in remote areas, providing the talent but underprivileged scholarship opportunities to have a chance at education, in hopes that they can one day return to their villages to create further positive impact.
Throughout the year, we continuously conducted camps and workshops. Our successfully running English camp continued. We collaborated with local universities and developed new camps including animation camp, music engineering camp, sushi making camp, percussion camp, a cappella camp, and more. The camps aim to help children discover a possible area for future development.
Through our “Donate Your Spare Digital Camera to Open a New Vista for Children from Remote Villages” campaign, we received over 4000 secondhand cameras donated from across Taiwan. We recruited over 20 professional photographers as volunteers to teach basic photography to the children through a series of classes held in Taitung. We hope the children will learn the skills to freely record moments from their childhood through his/her lens/perspective. With the surplus of donations, we shared cameras with other foundations involved in helping children from remote regions of Taiwan. After months of teaching, we held a photography exhibition with the children's works in Taipei, Taitung, and Hualien.
