Percussion Camp
Rhyming is a human instinct; rhythm is an essential component of music, so percussion music is an easy and natural lesson. The kids respond to it in real-time, and it’s the quickest way to develop their confidence in learning. For the past few years, percussion music has been popular around the world. The number of students learning percussion has been rising at a fanatical rate. Not only do they develop empathy and a sense of responsibility, but also become more sociable as a result.
In 2011 and 2012, the Alliance invited the Ju Percussion Group’s deputy leader Hong-Chi Ho to Taidong to assume the position of art director of the Paw Paw Drum Orchestra. Some unofficially trained kids have since been beating the energetic and enchanting percussion music. Their natural sense of rhythm plus being trained for over a year has created a new local style of music.
In order to help people learn by emulating each other and exchanging experiences, the Junyi School for Innovative Learning worked with Alliance in inviting Mr. Ho again to share his teaching experience and professional knowledge in the hope to cultivate more “seed teachers” in Taidong.
Mr. Ho’s cultivation lessons started with smaller instruments to train the “seed teachers” through the basic percussion training and some music games and ensembles. The different levels of training include directing students in playing the instruments with body swings and rhythm games. At the same time, the kids from different villages sang their own tribal songs to share with others. The purpose of the final training was to make them learn the ensemble skills through performance alone. Mr. Ho’s lively and humorous way of teaching enlightened the “seed teachers’” methods of teaching. We hope this kind of teaching seminar can really help enrich the learning experience of the interested kid.
