Bed and Breakfast Management Seminars

Through collaborative community efforts and effective utilization of local resources, Alliance hopes to train bed and breakfast (“ B & B”) operators to maximize their business potentials so the B & B industry can help lead the growth of  Huadong’s tourism industry.

In every B&B operator, there is a dream. However, passion alone cannot make this dream come true. Quality accommodations and unparalleled services are also critical to a B&B’s success.

While assisting in the relief efforts after Typhoon Morakot struck Huadong, Alliance Chairman Mr. Yen noticed excessive media coverage had caused tourists to postpone or cancel their trips to Taidong, bringing tourism in Taidong to a halt. When Alliance was established in December 2009, its first project was to organize efforts to help Taidong B&B operators rebuild their business.

Under the leadership of Patrick Su, an Alliance board member, volunteer students from the National Kaohsiung Hospitality College visited B&Bs all over Taidong.  The volunteers taught B&B operators housekeeping and customer service, helped standardize recipes and menus, and developed marketing plans to assist in the promotion of the B&B sector. There are about 1200 registered B&Bs in Huadong. In 2010, Alliance hosted four conferences focused on the management of B&Bs.  Conference workshops provided free lessons on making breakfast, interior design, housekeeping, cost management and marketing.  Alliance also helped to establish a coalition among B&Bs to improve their purchasing power.

Alliance has been actively promoting  Huadong tours to the international community.  To facilitate tourists’  understanding of the differences between B&Bs, i.e. the physical setting and the amenities offered,  Alliance helped design a set of  common graphics and marketing terms that  can be used on each B&B’s website and  marketing brochure.  For example, B&B owners can download one of the two professionally designed toiletry kit packaging designs from Alliance’s website for their own use.

In 2011, Alliance hosted two forums on “Integration of Marketing and Resources for Huadong Bed and Breakfast Inns”.  Through the Forums’ interactive discussions, B&B owners learned the importance of collaboration and cooperation in creating a vibrant tourism industry for Huadong.

In 2011, Alliance also helped Taidong County organize “The 2011 Huadong B&B Study Group.”  This study group invited Taidong B&B owners to visit well established B&Bs in Hualien, so that they may personally experience good service and learn from successful operations.

Alliance hopes these training programs for B and B operators will help improve their services and operating efficiency, thereby help to grow the B and B sector in Huadong.
