Rural Education: Donate Your Old iPads, Make a Difference
A simple donation can make a remarkable difference in a child’s learning!
17 October 2014, The Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) and Junyi Academy introduced its latest campaign – Donate Your Old iPads, Make a Difference. The campaign encourages iPad upgraders to donate iPads for children in rural learning shelters across Taiwan to use as a tool for online learning.
Learning shelters that would like to be part of the campaign will undergo an application, and share with ACF its plan on how it will maximize the use of the iPads to educate its children. The application will also allow ACF to better determine which shelter is in most need of resources. For every donation, HCT Logistics, Taiwan’s leading logistic company, will provide door to door courier service to pick up each donation for the convenience of the donors.
In October 2012, Junyi Academy developed a Chinese based free online education platform, www.junyiacademy.org. Inspired by its English variant, Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org), the platform was founded to deliver equal learning opportunities for children living in under-resourced mandarin learning communities. In two years, the website reached over 100,000 users.
For many, an iPad is utilized as an additional device for convenience; for rural learning shelters, an iPad is a learning tool that opens a whole new window of opportunity for a child. With every iPad donation, Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher for children’s books, will sponsor one year free trial account for an online English learning program it established for children; this timeframe will be suffice for learning shelters to determine whether it will adopt the program permanently to its program.
