Driftwood Workshop
Bringing inspiration to Taitung’s driftwood craftsmen and aspiring artists…
Because of Taiwan’s recurrent typhoons, driftwood is often found washed up on the shores of its East Coast – Hualien and
Taitung (Huatung); consequently leading to the region’s now vibrant driftwood
art scene.
With the growing
popularity of driftwood
arts and
furniture worldwide, The
Alliance Cultural Foundation (ACF) embraced the opportunity to inspire local driftwood
craftsmen the skill of integrating art into their works, as well as fostering
more
young driftwood artists in the region.
ACF invited internationally renowned driftwood and multimedia artist, Wei-Bing Hsu, to teach and inspire a group of craftsmen from the Sunrise Driftwood Studio the knowhow of assimilating art into driftwood furniture. Through the workshop, Wei-Bing Hsu shared the knowledge of creating contemporary driftwood furniture by integrating unique material such as bronze into its pieces.
In total, Wei-Bing Hsu conducted two workshops with the Sunrise Driftwood Studio. In his second involvement, together with its craftsmen, they remodeled the studio, a once abandoned elementary school. The newly renovated space kept its original classroom partition; and a coffee shop, showroom, as well as its original workstation was constructed.
In its effort to develop talent and cultivate more career prospects in Huatung, ACF invited Laheizi, a Taiwan aborigine driftwood artist, to conduct a driftwood furniture lecture at Taitung’s Kung-Tung Technical Senior High School (KTTSHS). The lecture aimed to inspire students from the school’s grades 11 and 12 carpentry program to creating driftwood art and furniture. Laheizi, an artist that works exclusively with driftwood, taught students fundamental driftwood knowledge – from wood identification, understanding its nature, properties, to sanding, fitting, and finishing handcrafted furniture.
Through these workshops/lecture, ACF hope to not only bring out innate artistic and creative talents, but to inspire them to understanding that art has no limits, and that beauty can be instilled in many ways.
