Industrial Design Program
Industrial Design Program
The futures of students are often determined by the grades they achieved in school. As a result, students with underperforming grades tend to have lower self-esteem, motivation and career prospects. Kung-Tung Technical Senior High School (KTTSHS) and The Alliance Cultural Foundation (Alliance) aims to foster the future of these students with the Industrial Design Program. Launched in September 2013, the program, led and designed by Mr. Neil Zhan, Chairman of Xcellent Lighting, strives to re-motivate these students and to successfully develop them in the field of industrial designing.
The two year program aspires to nourish underachieving students from Grades 11 through experiential learning. Led by industry leader, Mr. Fong-Yu Wang, it aims to develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation for the profession through hands on learning. To stimulate students’ interest in the program, they are brought on field trips to the factories to witness the actual operations of an industrial design company. The curriculum focused on courses in industrial designing and moulding, with molds and machinery donated by associated industries.
In the summer of 2014, Wonderland Nursery Goods Co., Ltd invited four KTTSHS teachers from Mechanical Machinery and Computer Graphics Department on a month long Pro/E training program in Dongguan, Shenzhen. Besides software usage and application training, the teachers also visited each department in the factories, and had in depth discussion with the department heads. Within the short span of one month, the teachers had gained immense industrial knowledge. Faculty Head, Mr. Huang Jian Chao commented that KTTSHS used to send teachers to Germany for learning trips, and he had been envious of their opportunities. But after teaching for so many years, he is also grateful for this rare chance to work with industry experts to learn new industrial trends and increase his knowledge. He also noted that besides learning how to use the computer graphics software but also learnt to be more detailed and gained foresight into the industry future.
The program tracks the progress of each student based on three factors: attitude and behavior (40%), professional skills (40%), and English (20%). English, often disregarded in comparable programs offered in other vocational schools, was emphasized into the curriculum to not limit student potential and growth, and to open more possibilities in the presently globalized world.
The two year program ended successful in June 2015. Alliance's key role is to support and to bring in the right people who can effectively lead the project. It hopes that through the success of endeavoring a non-traditional curriculum and way of education that it can be used as a future model/method for other vocational schools.
